The Edge district where the water came first, and the old coast goes on quietly going under.

What Pacifica Is

Pacifica was a coastal town before the Collapse, one of the hundreds the corridor held, and the water got to it early, over the beaches and the low streets, and stayed. The rebuild never considered it. There is no economics in pumping out a town the ocean has decided to keep, so the maps carry the name and the tide carries everything else, and Pacifica became what it is now: the Edge's clearest proof of the argument the whole zone makes, that the city is a negotiation with the water, and the water is patient.

The Texture of It

The town drowns in layers. The lowest streets are gone entirely, a harbor now for nothing. The middle blocks stand in water to their windowsills, the houses opening and closing with the surge, kelp in the doorways. The high ground still holds a strip of dry town, roofs sound enough to squat under, and a few people do, the kind of people who choose the Edge on purpose and choose its quietest district on top of that. At low tide the old street grid surfaces, curbs, lane lines, a crosswalk that still points across a bay, and you can walk a town plan the way you would walk a floor plan of a demolished house.

Who Goes There

Almost no one, which is the district's function. Salvage divers work the sunken blocks for copper and brass and whatever the first looters missed, a trade requiring patience and a boat and a tolerance for working inside other people's bedrooms. Beyond them, Pacifica gets the Edge's usual traffic: people who need to not be found, and people conducting business best transacted where there are no witnesses except a town that has already seen everything end once.

Why It Matters

Every district in the Edge shows the city its future, but Pacifica shows it in the tense the Core fears most: the present continuous. The town is not ruined. It is ruining, still, visibly, a little more each year, and the water that took it is the same water standing in Tideline's parks and silting Drydock's marina, working its way up the coast with no schedule and no enemies. Danger City does not talk about Pacifica. Pacifica is what the not talking is about.

That is Pacifica. It kept its name, its street grid, and its patience, and it is teaching the coast a lesson one winter at a time.
