The Edge district the squatters and artists took, where making things needs no one's permission.

What the Colony Is

The Colony is what happens when abandoned buildings meet people with nowhere to be and something to make. The rebuild wrote this stretch of the Edge off decades ago, warehouses, an old campus of something, blocks of housing nobody wired, and into the write-off moved the corridor's surplus people: the squatters, the artists, the ones done with the city's terms, the ones the city was done with first. They ran salvaged cable off whatever still hums, patched roofs with billboard skin, and built, without anyone's permission, the only district in Danger City that was never planned by money.

The Texture of It

Power in the Colony is a craft, not a utility. Every building runs its own arrangement, solar scrap, a generator, a long illegal line, and the district's evenings glow in patches, a window here, a floor there, lamplight in a warehouse like a fire in a cave. The making is everywhere and mostly unsellable: murals on interior walls no stranger will see, sculpture welded from the district's own bones, music played for the room it is played in. The Underline makes culture the city eventually buys. The Colony makes things the way other places grow weeds, constantly, for no market, because the makers are alive and the walls were empty.

The Terms

The Colony has one rule, enforced by everyone because it protects everyone: draw no attention. No trade big enough to interest the gangs, no noise loud enough to reach a Watchdog's fee schedule, no light bright enough to show up in an aerial survey some tower might someday commission. The district survives on being not worth anyone's while, and its people tend that worthlessness like a crop. It is a fragile arrangement, and everyone in it knows exactly how fragile, and stays anyway, because the alternative is rent, and rent is the city, and they left the city.

Why It Matters

The Colony is the Edge's counterargument. The rest of the zone shows what happens when the city withdraws: ruin, water, dark. The Colony shows the other thing that happens: people, arriving into the abandonment and making it hold light. It is not safe and it is not lasting and nobody in it would trade it, and when the story needs to show what freedom actually costs in this world, the Colony is the price tag.

That is the Colony. The city forgot these buildings, and the forgetting is the only landlord the district has ever had, and the district intends to keep it that way.
